CARA success at British Rowing Indoor Championships

A number of CARA clubs sent representatives to take part in the second British Rowing Indoor Championships on Sat 12th December 2015  – with some excellent results for the coast against rowers from across the UK.

The coast’s top result came early in the day, with Shoreham’s Charlotte Pigg taking home the British Champion title, cruising to gold in the women’s 30-39 2k category in a time of 7mins 17secs, significantly ahead of the other competitors in her field.

Shoreham also produced two other medal winners, with bronzes from Sarah Faith in the women’s 30-39 lightweight category and from Max Huxtable in the open men’s lightweight competition. The latter had a storming start, matching the eventual winner GB rower Richard Chambers stroke for stroke over the first 500m.However, unable to maintain the pace set by the full-time GB athlete, Max would eventually take the bronze medal;  an impressive performance against one of the nation’s best lightweight rowers.

Eastbourne’s Steve Turner took home CARA’s final medal – a bronze in the men’s 50-54 category with an impressive 6:32.6.

Alongside the CARA competitors there were impressive sights as the GB mens eight battled it out in the open 2k event – a huge time from Moe Sbihi as he took Matthew Pinsent’s long-standing British record.

A huge congratulations to CARA’s medal winners, and to everyone who took part in the event. Other times were impressive against stiff national competition and show the strength of the coastal rowers.

CARA Unites Against Cancer

CARAcycleCongratulations to Reece, Owen and Luke Mullaney from Deal Rowing Club who this weekend completed an epic sponsored cycle ride from Southsea to Herne Bay in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The ‘CARA Unites Against Cancer’ event was dreamt up by the trio, and saw them stop at every CARA rowing club across the two days, being joined on each leg by one or two members of each club.

The boys’ efforts to unite the association in fundraising has been fantastic – to donate to their cause click here.CARACycle2

Dover Regatta

Dover Regatta was, after cancellations, the 6th regatta in the 2015 season, it was held on the 27th of June 2015 in sunny conditions but with choppy water and stiff westerly breeze. Most clubs attended, the exceptions being Southsea and Hastings.

Some great races were held with some very close finishes with rowers all pushing hard to ensure they weren’t caught out by the stagger on the finish

Deal were the best club on the day, taking the Grand Aggregate by a huge margin and winning 6 events, S4+, JS4+, LJ4+, J4+, and a dramatic last gasp sprint finish past Bexhill in the Senior Sculls which thrilled spectators.

Shoreham’s Ladies also had a good day with wins in the Senior Fours, and Senior Pairs and 1,2 finish in the Single Sculls as well as a second place in the Junior Pair and Double Scull.

It’s always good to see the host club doing well and that was the case case at Dover; they took two wins, in the Junior Pairs, and the Ladies Double Sculls.

The J16 league is becoming somewhat one sided in both the Girls and Boys events with Deal dominating in the Boys and Shoreham in the Girls both with 100% win records so far. It’s is sad, that so far this year the J14 event has failed to attract enough entrants to run.

At the halfway point in the season Deal are looking hot favourites for the most prized CARA trophy, the Grand Aggregate for the club with the most wins in a season. Bexhill are, as has been the case for a number of years now, leading the way in the CARA league for the club with the most points from finishing in the top 6 in all events.

Season well under way

With four regattas down, the CARA season is well underway but there’s still everything to play for. We’ve had some great racing so far with some fairly coastal conditions – testing crews mettle against the waves early on in the season.

Most of the events are still wide open, none more so than the Ladies’ Double Sculls, which for the first year is a grand aggregate event and proving extremely popular. Attracting a large entry of crews at each regatta, after 3 races (the first called off due to adverse weather) it is extremely tight at the top of the table with Dover, Shoreham and Bexhill all battling it out for the win.

It so far also looks like there might be a shift in dominance in the men’s single sculls event, with Will Dennis from Deal taking the win from Bexhill’s long-time sculls champion Mark Mitchell in the first regatta. Now with Mark out of action (we wish him a speedy recovery) can anyone oppose Will?

Deal Rowing Club are so far dominating the Grand Aggregate, with consistent performances and wins from both mens and womens crews across the range of events. But with eight more regattas left to race there is still time for other clubs to step up and challenge them.

It’s shaping up to be an exciting season!

CARA J16s race at Junior Inter-Regional Regatta

Four CARA juniors joined over 900 juniors from across the country last weekend at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham, racing at the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta 2015.

Beth Buchanan and Phoebe Mercer from Shoreham RC, and Abigail Little and Charlie Cooper from Bexhill ARC were selected to represent the Wessex region in the J16 coxless four.

Despite limited training time and never having raced a coxless four before, the girls rose to the challenge. Strong winds made things tricky at the start of their fist heat, however they found their stride as they lined up again in the B-final. A fabulous row saw the girls not only take a well-deserved second place, but also knock a whopping 55 seconds off their heat time. Well done!

A big congratulations to all four girls from CARA – we’re very proud to see our juniors representing Wessex on the national stage.

New Website!

We’ve got a new website! So we at CARA have finally succumbed to pressure from members to update the website and bring a more up to date experience to current and potential rowers from the South East.

We think our new website is a great step forward and will allow anyone to understand what we do, why we do it and to see how our clubs are progressing both in the league and via posting event on our news page.

Please bear with us while we finalise this new design and get to grips with the site, while we do this we will gratefully receive all constructive feedback.

WE NEED YOU!

Whilst we have a new website to shout about we need help from our members to maintain and update it, please get in touch (using the contact page) if you are willing to help!
