However the weather calmed over Saturday night and Sunday’s regatta at Bexhill went ahead on rough but certainly row-able water.\nIt was well organised day with strong performances in the bumpy water from the home club\, and also from Deal and Shoreham. It was Bexhill who took the Grand Aggregate on the day\, the result of a strong team effort and a lot of crews on the water placing well. Deal put in a strong performance to take the Junior Aggregate and the Novice Aggregate\, while Shoreham wont the Ladies Aggregate. It was Shoreham who took the most race wins and maintained their lead in the race for the CARA Grand; they took 8 victories in all\, including winning every ladies status race held. We saw some very close racing\, some huge victory margins and some drama in the rough conditions on Sunday. \nWorthing Town got off to a dramatic start\, after Shoreham’s J16 Girls\, started the day as they finished last season\, dominant in the Quad\, and Deal’s Senior Sculler\, Will Dennis followed his impressive 2015 form with an emphatic win in the Single\, it fell to Shoreham’s J16 Boys to offer something different to spectators; which they did\, by capsizing their boat from the lead of the race within just 20 metres of the finish line\, they could only to watch from the water as Deal took the victory and the crowd (after initial concern was relieved by the safety boat’s arrival) offered them precious little solace… \nIt was largely a day belonging to last years top three clubs\, Bexhill\, Deal and Shoreham\, who between them shared 12 of the 14 status victories on offer. Of the three it was Shoreham who took the bragging rights with their 6 wins on the water. Though Bexhill and Deal both showed that this season will be very closely fought all the way\, many races won by one club could easily have been taken one of the other two. Bexhill will try to make the most of their home advantage for the upcoming double weekend\, so it’s anyone’s guess who’ll be on top after the results are in for Bexhill and Hastings regattas in two weeks time. \nWhilst the day may have been dominated by other clubs\, it is always good to see the home club performing and Worthing did this with a victory for their Novice Ladies\, who pipped a strong Herne Bay crew by just 1/2 a canvas on the line. \nCongratulations to Worthing rowing club for putting on a great two days and to all crews who took part. \nWeather: \nWorthing Town Regatta took place on Sunday 8th May 2016 with a moderate South-Easterly wind. Most clubs attended\, the exceptions being Southsea and Hastings. \nSome great races were held with some very close finishes with rowers all pushing hard to ensure they weren’t caught out by the stagger on the finish \nDeal were the best club on the day\, taking the Grand Aggregate by a huge margin and winning 6 events\, S4+\, JS4+\, LJ4+\, J4+\, and a dramatic last gasp sprint finish past Bexhill in the Senior Sculls which thrilled spectators. \nShoreham’s Ladies also had a good day with wins in the Senior Fours\, and Senior Pairs and 1\,2 finish in the Single Sculls as well as a second place in the Junior Pair and Double Scull. \nIt’s always good to see the host club doing well and that was the case case at Dover; they took two wins\, in the Junior Pairs\, and the Ladies Double Sculls. \nThe J16 league is becoming somewhat one sided in both the Girls and Boys events with Deal dominating in the Boys and Shoreham in the Girls both with 100% win records so far. It’s is sad\, that so far this year the J14 event has failed to attract enough entrants to run. \nAt the halfway point in the season Deal are looking hot favourites for the most prized CARA trophy\, the Grand Aggregate for the club with the most wins in a season. Bexhill are\, as has been the case for a number of years now\, leading the way in the CARA league for the club with the most points from finishing in the top 6 in all events. \n regatta 2015 was held at Deal on the 11th of April. The Viking Shield regatta is always used as a benchmark for CARA clubs; a great way to check out the competition before the league season gets underway in May. This year however\, Wind\, rain and overcast skies may have been contributing factors in what was a lower than usual turn out to a CARA regatta. Nonetheless\, there was some great racing and good promise shown for many crews for the season ahead. \nThe Viking Shield itself remains with Deal\, after a convincing victory over other Kent entrants Herne Bay in the second race of the day\, the Men’s Senior Pairs. \nNotable victories of the day were those for Deal in the Men’s senior events\, dominated in recent years by Bexhill\, perhaps the tides could be changing… Deal also dominated in the J/S and Junior men’s events.
