Worthing Town Regatta 2016

Worthing town regatta capped off a fantastic first weekend for the 2016 season. We saw some very close racing, some huge victory margins and some drama in the rough conditions on Sunday.

Worthing Town got off to a dramatic start, after Shoreham’s J16 Girls, started the day as they finished last season, dominant in the Quad, and Deal’s Senior Sculler, Will Dennis followed his impressive 2015 form with an emphatic win in the Single, it fell to Shoreham’s J16 Boys to offer something different to spectators; which they did, by capsizing their boat from the lead of the race within just 20 metres of the finish line, they could only to watch from the water as Deal took the victory and the crowd (after initial concern was relieved by the safety boat’s arrival) offered them precious little solace…

It was largely a day belonging to last years top three clubs, Bexhill, Deal and Shoreham, who between them shared 12 of the 14 status victories on offer. Of the three it was Shoreham who took the bragging rights with their 6 wins on the water. Though Bexhill and Deal both showed that this season will be very closely fought all the way, many races won by one club could easily have been taken one of the other two. Bexhill will try to make the most of their home advantage for the upcoming double weekend, so it’s anyone’s guess who’ll be on top after the results are in for Bexhill and Hastings regattas in two weeks time.

Whilst the day may have been dominated by other clubs, it is always good to see the home club performing and Worthing did this with a victory for their Novice Ladies, who pipped a strong Herne Bay crew by just 1/2 a canvas on the line.

Worthing Town Regatta took place on Sunday 8th May 2016 with a moderate South-Easterly wind. Conditions were initially rough, becoming calmer later in the day.
