In Memory of Ivor Lloyd (1947-2026)
The Coast Rowing Amateur Association (CARA) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Ivor Lloyd on 26th August 2026, following a short illness.
Ivor was a legendary figure in British rowing whose remarkable career spanned the grass-roots coastal regattas of the South Coast to the absolute pinnacle of international and Olympic sport.
A Coastal Legacy
Ivor’s rowing journey began at Eastbourne College, where he won the M4+ National Schools title. Joining Eastbourne Rowing Club in the late 1960s, he quickly became one of coastal rowings standout figures winning the JS4+ South Coast Championship, the Senior Sculling Championship, and setting a world record for sculling across the English Channel.
Though his later career took him across the globe, Ivor’s connection to coastal rowing never faded. He remained a devoted member and supporter of Eastbourne RC for over five decades, traveling back for regatta days, staying actively involved, and offering advice and guidance to rowers right up until his final weeks.
Impact on National & Olympic Rowing
Beyond CARA waters, Ivor’s contributions transformed British rowing:
- International Competitor: Represented Great Britain at the 1977 World Rowing Championships in the M4X.
- Leander Club Leader: Served for over 30 years across roles as Captain, Director of Rowing, and Chairman, steering the club through an unprecedented era of success.
- Olympic Visionary: Instrumental in bringing legendary coach Jürgen Gröbler
to the UK in the early 1990s, laying the foundation for the historic Redgrave/Pinsent era. - 2012 Legacy: Served as General Manager of Dorney Lake, successfully delivering the venue for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Generosity & Mentorship
Above all his medals and administrative achievements, Ivor will be remembered for his unwavering generosity of spirit, unflinching dedication to boat craft, and passion for helping rowers reach their goals. Whether guiding a novice on the beach or advising Olympic champions, he always made time to support anyone with drive and ambition.
